Description: Boren Fellowships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. graduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS)
Who can apply: First years, sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students
Description: CLS institutes provide fully funded, group-based intensive language instruction and structures cultural enrichment experiences for seven to ten weeks in various locations abroad.

Description: Fulbright is the largest U.S. international exchange program, offering opportunities for students, scholars, and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide. The competition is open to U.S. citizens who will have a bachelor's degree by the beginning date of the grant. All grants include round-trip transportation to the host country, a monetary living stipend, and limited health benefits.
There is no GPA requirement for research and English Teaching Assistant awards.

Gilman International Scholarship
Who can apply: Seniors who receive a Pell Grant
Description: The program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. 2,300 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded each year. The award must be used to defray study abroad costs, including program tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance, and international airfare.
Students who apply for and receive the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad are then eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Scholarship Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000.
You must receive undergraduate credit for your time abroad.

James C. Gaither Junior Fellows Program
Who can apply: Seniors and recent alumni
Description: The James C. Gaither Junior Fellows Program provides an opportunity for approximately 11-13 students who desire careers in international affairs to have a substantive one-year working experience in Washington, D.C. Fellows work as research assistants to scholars working at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
