Internally Funded Faculty Development
Professional development is important to remaining up-to-date on new trends in pedagogy, staying current with opportunities in our field, and researching topics in our areas of expertise – for our own growth as life-long learners and to bring creativity into our classrooms and enrich our contact hours when teaching One Course At A Time. As a college, we recognize that scholarly and creative activities, both inside and outside the classroom, enrich the individual faculty member involved and the institution as a whole. We are pleased to share multiple opportunities for professional development.
Professional Development and Travel for Faculty
Annual opportunities
There are two cycles of funding, typically Fall and Spring each academic year.
A Fall funding call supports activities taking place between January 1 and June 30 of the current academic year.
A Spring funding call supports activities taking place between July 1 and June 30 of the following academic year.
All faculty can submit requests for funding for:
- Travel expenses related to conference attendance or research
- Non travel-related professional development expenses
- Expenses that aid the completion of a substantive major scholarly or creative project recognized by academic or other professional peers beyond the Cornell community
In addition, all tenure-track faculty can submit requests to assist in the development of interdisciplinary or linked courses or the substantial revision of a course the faculty member intends to teach within the following two years, culminating in the creation of a detailed syllabus.
Sabbatical Leave and Campbell McConnell sabbatical support
On an annual basis, eligible faculty members may apply for a sabbatical leave for one-semester or one year long. Leaves are granted based on the substance of the candidate’s application, the financial resources available, and the number of faculty members seeking sabbatical leave from the candidate’s department in a given year.
Cornell Summer Research Institute (CSRI)
Student-faculty collaborative research for the summer through the Cornell Summer Research Institute.
