Section 6.1: On-Call Responsibilities

Being on-call is an integral part of the RA position.  This is a time to ensure the building is secure.  You'll be able to meet and greet the residents in your building, invite them down to the RA office to hang out, and be a visible member of the building community.  Residents will use this time to ask the RA on-call for help accessing building resources.  And staff will also work during this time to recognize and prevent potential issues and concerns. 

 * Because each residence hall is unique and the needs for each area will vary from building to building a more complete list of duty responsibilities and expectations will be provided by your ADRL.

Block/Block Break On-Call Coverage

During the block and over block breaks a member of the RA staff will be on duty in their respective buildings each night.  

Block and block break on-call expectations:

  • Do not consume/be under the influence of alcohol the afternoon prior to or while being on-call.  Do not be under the influence of other illegal substances at any time during your employment as an RA.
  • Be inside the building at 7:00 p.m. and update duty sign(s)
  • Pick-up on-call phone from the RA office and check for and return any voice messages
  • Perform a round of the building before going to the RA office at 8:00 p.m.
  • Office hours from 8:00-11:00 p.m. (it is not appropriate to sit in your room during this time).
  • Perform a round through the building after 11:00 p.m. to ensure observance of quiet hours
  • If it's a weekend night (Friday and Saturday), perform an additional round after 1:00 a.m.
  • Document information from each round through the building in the duty log and submit by 9:00 a.m. the morning immediately following your being on-call
  • Confront all policy violations observed while on-call and document each incident in the appropriate incident report form by 9:00 a.m. the morning immediately following your being on-call
  • Remain inside the building until 7:00 a.m. the morning immediately following your being on-call
  • Return the duty phone to the RA office and plug it into the charger by 9:00 a.m. the morning immediately following your being on-call

Break Duty Coverage

During break periods when the residence halls remain open, such as Fall and Spring Break, we will continue to have staff available, but with reduced coverage and services. One RA will serve on-call for the east side of campus, and one RA will serve on-call for the west side of campus.

Break duty expectations:

  • Do not consume/be under the influence of alcohol the afternoon prior to or while being on-call.  Do not be under the influence of other illegal substances at any time during your employment as an RA.
  • Pick-up duty phone from the Residence Life office by 4:30 p.m. and check messages
  • Perform a round of all buildings in your assigned area sometime between 7:00-8:00 p.m.
  • No official RA office hours, although must hang a sign with the duty phone number on each RA office door.
  • You do not need to remain in your building, but will need to remain on campus and be readily available to respond to concerns that arise
  • Perform any additional rounds deemed necessary after 11:00 p.m.
  • Remain available by phone until 8:00 a.m. the following morning
  • Document information from each round through the building in the duty log and submit by 9:00 a.m. the morning immediately following your being on-call
  • Confront all policy violations observed while on-call and document each incident in the appropriate incident report form by 9:00 a.m. the morning immediately following your being on-call
  • Return the duty phone to the Residence Life office and plug it into the charger by 9:00 a.m. the morning immediately following your being on-call
