Counseling Appointments for Student Mental Health

Appointments for mental health services

Confidentiality: counseling services are separate from any other student records. Information revealed in counseling sessions is confidential, except in cases of imminent danger or where otherwise mandated by law, or when permission is granted to release information.

Appointments are required for counseling sessions to ensure we are able to give you our full attention.  Counseling office hours are Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. during the academic year. Mental health services may occur outtside normal hours of operation, by appointment only as approved by center staff.  You can schedule an appointment online, call 319.895.4292 or stop by during office hours.

If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, call 911 (9-911 from a campus phone.) You can also contact Campus Safety for assistance in obtaining an ambulance or connecting you with on-call Student Affairs staff outside after 4:30 p.m Monday-Friday and on weekends.

Our office services are free, and include

  • Short-term, confidential individual and couple mental health counseling for Cornell students.
  • Educational programs to enhance human development.
  • Consultations for parents and Cornell employees.
  • Referrals for long-term therapy, specialized therapy, and medication.
  • Referrals for emergency and inpatient mental health services
  • Support groups on diverse concerns. Group topics and meeting times are determined by student interest.

How much time do you need for a counseling session?

The initial appointment often lasts about 60 minutes. Follow up counseling sessions may be up to 25-45 minutes in length. Please allow for this amount of time when you make an appointment.

Online mental health and anxiety screening

These free screenings are made available to all Cornell students on-demand and are taken anonymously. The screenings are provided to help you find out—in a matter of minutes—whether or not professional consultation would be helpful to you. This includes screening for depression, bipolar disorder (aka manic depression), anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (aka PTSD), and alcohol and eating disorders.
