Reporting attendance

Overall class attendance must be reported for your class roster in Self-Service by noon on the fourth day of the block. At the end of the block you will also be required to report a last day of attendance (LDA) for any student who stops attending class before the last day of the block. We encourage you to keep a daily attendance record for your reference in case this becomes necessary.

Changing a grade you’ve submitted for a student

Upon submission of grades at the end of the block in Self-Service, those grades become the final record for the student. In order to change a submitted grade you, as the instructor, must submit a request  explaining why the grade should be changed and what new grade should be assigned to the student.

Independent study options for students

Students have five options for independent study and they are allowed to take up to four (4) all-college independent study courses to count toward their degree requirements. Students may ask you for assistance finding internship opportunities in their major or future field of work or they may ask you to assist them as a faculty sponsor for projects. These opportunities are all good examples of Ingenuity in Action opportunities and funding and will be recorded through the InAct portal for transcription. Details about independent study can be found in the Course Catalogue.

Internships

Internships for credit require completion of an internship syllabus and must be submitted with approval from the student’s academic advisor. Students may also work with the Berry Career Institute to identify internship opportunities through Handshake or direct connections with a sponsoring institution or employer.

Individual projects

Individual projects are intended to allow a student to explore a topic that is not covered in normal course offerings at Cornell. For an individual project you, as the sponsoring faculty member, will oversee the project as a tutorial format. The student must submit an independent study contract and syllabus online for approval by you and the chair of your department at least one week before the start of the block before they can take on a project. A project can be completed during a block or over the summer.
