Women as Doctors and Midwives

Read the story of Agnodice by the Roman writer Hyginus.

What does the story say about woman to woman relationships? About women's attitude toward women who practiced medicine?

What does it say about men's attitudes toward the woman who allowed Agnodice to heal her? What does the reference to Baubo suggest about men's perceptions of medicine practiced by women? Why do you think men do not want women doctors?

Clearly, there were women who were doctors and midwives in the ancient world. Read these inscriptions from the Greek and Roman world.
