IMAP and POP Secure Settings

This page will assist you with configuring your email client such as Outlook Express to connection to Cornell's email server which uses a secure (SSL) connection. The below instruction were written for a client using IMAP. Your windows may vary if you are connecting using the POP protocol. Choose your IMAP/POP mail client.

Outlook Express
Apple Mail
Entourage for Mac
Mozilla Thunderbird

Outlook Express secure connection settings.

  • Open Outlook Express (You will probably get an error informing you that the mail server is not responding or is unavailable. Click cancel to remove the error message)
  • Select Accounts from the Tools menu
  • Select the Mail tab if it is not already selected
  • Highlight the connection to the Cornell mail server and select properties
  • Select the Servers tab
  • In the Incoming and Outgoing mail server fields, change the entry to "mail1.cornellcollege.edu" without the quotes
  • Under Outgoing Mail Server, select My server requires authentication.
  • Your Servers tab should look like the image shown below except your Cornell College username will appear

  • Select the Advanced tab
  • Under Outgoing mail (SMTP) check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL)
  • Under Incoming mail (IMAP) check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL)
  • Your Advanced tab should look like the image shown below

  • Select OK to except the change
  • Select Close to exit the Internet Accounts window

You should now be able to send and receive mail using the new secure IMAP or POP connection. If not please contact the Office of Information Technology for further assistance.

Apple Mail secure connection settings.

  • Open Apple Mail
  • Choose Preferences from the Mail menu
  • Select the Accounts button
  • Make sure your account is highlighted in the Accounts window
  • Select the Account Information tab
  • In the Incoming Mail Server field, change the entry to "mail1.cornellcollege.edu" without the quotes
  • Your Accounts window should look like the image shown below except your Cornell College username will appear
  • Under Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) select Server Settings
  • In the Outgoing Mail Server field change the entry to "mail1.cornellcollege.edu" without the quotes
  • Check Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
  • Your Servers Settings should look like the image shown below except your Cornell College username will appear
  • Select OK
  • Select the Advanced tab
  • Check Use SSL
  • Your Advanced tab should look like the image shown below
  • Close the Accounts window (save changes if prompted)

You should now be able to send and receive mail using the new secure IMAP or POP connection. If not please contact the Office of Information Technology for further assistance.

Entourage for Mac secure connection settings.

  • Open Entourage
  • Select Account Setting from the Entourage menu
  • Highlight the Mail tab
  • Double-click on your account profile
  • Under Receiving mail in the IMAP server field change the entry to "mail1.cornellcollege.edu" without the quotes
  • Under Receiving mail click on Click here for advanced receiving options
  • Check This IMAP service requires a secure connection (SSL)
  • Your advanced receiving options should look like the image shown below

  • Close the advanced receiving options window
  • Under Sending mail in the SMTP server field change the entry to "mail1.cornellcollege.edu" without the quotes
  • Your Accounts Setting window options should look like the image shown below except your Cornell College username will appear

  • Under Sending mail click on Click here for advanced sending options
  • Check SMTP service requires secure connection (SSL)
  • Your advanced sending options should look like the image shown below

  • Close the advanced receiving options window
  • Click OK to close the Edit Accounts window
  • Close the Account window

You should now be able to send and receive mail using the new secure IMAP or POP connection. If not please contact the Office of Information Technology for further assistance.
