Advising Year at a Glance

This "year at a glance" is intended to remind advisors of when they should be meeting with advisees and/or reaching out about specific advising-related topics.  Advisors may meet with advisees more often, but this is a guideline for the type of developmental advising Cornell College wants to provide to students.  This guide will be updated for 2020-2021 and the Ingenuity Core Curriculum in September 2020.

Advising Responsibilities at New Student Orientation

Block 2 and 3

• Meet with second-year students.

  • Discuss their results from the sophomore year retention survey

  • Explore major possibilities and remind students that they need to declare a major by the 12/1 deadline.

  • Discuss career clusters, the articulation of academic and career goals, and academic and career resources at Cornell

  • Discuss the advantages and opportunities available for experiential learning at Cornell.  Ask students about their goals for experiential learning and discuss how they can achieve these goals at Cornell.  Topics may include off-campus opportunities, Cornell Fellows, Scholarship opportunities, internships, Dimensions, Civic Engagement Office and The Berry Center.   

• Meet individually with your first-year advisees, prior to Spring registration which occurs during week 2 of Block 3.  You may choose to schedule a group advising meeting to cover the following material followed by an individual registration meeting with each advisee.

  • Discuss the importance of academic planning.

  • Have students reflect on their skills based on their first two courses and the skill sets they currently have and those they need to develop.

  • Have students reflect on their strengths and weaknesses in the classroom.

  • Discuss what it means for students to take responsibility for their own education.

  • Have students discuss their academic interests/goals and how they plan to meet their goals.

  • Have students reflect on what they want out of college and compare to reflections they made during the NSO group advising session.

  • Encourage students to complete the Mid-Year Survey, required before registration for the spring semester.  This is the follow-up survey to the College Student Inventory taken prior to the start of classes

• First-year students register for Blocks 5, 6, 7, and 8 in week two of Block 3.

• Second-year students should have declared a major by now.  If they have not, you can refer them to the Coordinator of Academic Support and Advising for further major exploration.

Block 5

• Meet with first-year advisees to discuss the Mid-Year Survey results.  This is the follow-up survey to the College Student Inventory taken prior to the start of classes.  This report has information relevant to resources students may find useful to seek out to enhance their experience, along with information that may indicate a student is considering transferring from our institution.

• Begin a discussion with first-year advisees on the advantages and opportunities available for experiential learning and exploring career pathways at Cornell. Ask students about their goals for experiential learning and discuss how they can achieve these goals at Cornell. Topics may include off-campus opportunities, Cornell Fellows, Scholarship opportunities, internships, the Berry Career Institute, Dimensions, Civic Engagement Office.

Block 6 and 7

• Begin meeting with advisees to discuss the next year’s registration plans.  For first-year students, this should include discussion of possible majors and the declaration process in their second year on-campus. For sophomores and juniors, this should include a discussion of their experiential learning plans.

• Registration for the next academic year happens in week two of Block 7.  

• Students must meet with their advisor prior to registration - this could be during Block 6 or Block 7.  If an advisee does not meet with you to discuss registration, email their name to the Registrar so a registration hold is placed.  If an advisee mentions they may be transferring, notify the Registrar or the Dean of Students.
