Senior Emails and Digital Wrap up
This page is for graduating seniors only - here's what will happen with your Cornell email and documents.
Dates to remember
All graduating students will have access to their Cornell email account and through Sept. 30 following graduation.
On Oct. 1, your Gmail, Google docs, Google drive, and H: drive will be removed from the Cornell system. We realize that some of you will be using your email for communication during your job search. If you do not have another email account set up by Sept. 30, please open a ticket to request a short extension.
Email Forwarding for Life will only be available after you have officially graduated. It does take some time for final grades to be processed and for the Registrar's Office to report your status. As a guideline, please allow two weeks before attempting to enable email forwarding.
Transferring your Cornell email and Google docs:
To transfer to an existing Gmail account:
- While signed in to your school account in a browser, go to Transfer your content.
- Enter your personal Gmail address (the account you will copy your Cornell email to).
- Select "Get code."
- On your receiving (non-Cornell) Gmail account, check your Gmail inbox for a confirmation email from Google. In the email, select "Get confirmation code." A new tab will open with a code.
- On your school account, go back to the "Transfer your content" page. Enter the code, then choose "Verify."
- Choose the content you'd like to copy, then select "Start transfer."
Details about the copy process
- The copy process usually happens within a few hours, but it can take up to a week.
- Copied files might appear in batches on your personal Gmail account during the copy process.
- When your files are finished copying, you'll get an email at your Gmail address.
If you are transferring to a personal account that is not Gmail:
- Open a browser and go to takeout.google.com
- Sign in with your Cornell College email account if prompted.
- Click on “Deselect All” and then check the boxes for the items you wish to transfer – we recommend “Drive” and “Mail.”
- Leave the defaults selected to send a link to a zip file with your new information. If you’d like to use a different service, select that from the dropdown.
- Click “Create Export” to transfer your items.
- The process is complete!
Personal home directories
Your (H:) drive is not available from off-campus. Please copy any files that you wish to keep to your personal computer or another form of media and remove all remaining data from your personal home directory before leaving school.
Google Docs
You can transfer your Google docs to another Gmail account by following the instructions above, or do it manually as below. If you are the owner of any shared documents that others depend on (e.g. organizations you belong to, work-study jobs, independent research, etc.), please be sure to transfer ownership of those documents to other members of your organization. Once your account is removed, individual users will lose access to any documents you are the owner of.
- Download documents from Google Drive
- Click the checkbox(es) next to the item(s) that you'd like to download.
- Expand the More drop-down menu, and select Download.
- Select a file format you'd like to convert to and download your item, such as Microsoft Word. If you select multiple items, they'll be compressed into a .zip file.
- Click Download.
- Extract documents from the downloaded ZIP
- Windows: Right-click the ZIP file, and click Extract all files.
- Mac OS X: Double-click the ZIP file.
- Upload documents to Google Drive
- Use the Google Chrome web browser in order to upload an entire folder to Google Drive.
- Click the Upload button.
- Click Folder.
- Browse to the folder with your extracted Google Drive files.
- Click OK.
Configuring Email Forwarding for Life
Very important notes:
- Please follow all instructions step by step. Our email system is set up in two parts, Gmail and the Cornell forwarding system. Do not set up forwarding from within the Gmail account. When the Gmail part of your account is removed, forwarding will also stop working unless you use the Cornell forwarding system.
- When this process is complete, your Google Apps account will no longer exist and any messages sent to your Cornell email address will be forwarded to the personal email address you provide in the form.
- You will be able to modify your mail forwarding settings at any time by visiting the website given in the instructions below.
- Enroll in our Password Management Program: If you have not already enrolled in Cornell’s password management program, you may enroll here - https://secure.
cornellcollege.edu/pwreset/. Enrolling will allow you to reset your password in the event that you forget it. If you do not enroll and you forget your password you will be required to take extra steps to verify your identity to the Office of Information Technology. Please enroll! - Change your password: You will need to change your password once to allow password synchronization with the Gmail servers. This can be done on our password management page - https://secure.
cornellcollege.edu/pwreset/. Note: If you do not change your password you may get a "username and password" error when you try to transfer your email. - Configure mail forwarding: Important! These steps will delete your Cornell Gmail account including all of your email and documents. Only do this after transferring all of your email and documents to a new account (and confirming their success)!
