Dungy Writing Studio

“The Dungy Writing Studio puts students first by guiding them through the challenges of brainstorming, outlining, thesis creation, drafts, and editing.” -Talitha McGuire, Religion and Biology major

Writing is a practical skill

From sending important emails to crafting effective presentations—the words we use matter. Here in the Dungy Writing Studio, we’ll help you learn to write clear and effective text for every occasion.

Our goal is to help you become a clear, confident writer—one conference at a time.

What to expect

When you come to the Studio for a conference, you’ll meet one-on-one with a consultant and have their full attention for an hour. Our top priority is teaching you to express your ideas in your own voice, so you’ll work with the consultant to set an agenda for the conference.

You can show up with a draft, a rough outline—or a blank piece of paper if you’re stuck. Writer’s block happens! Let us help.

We won’t mark up your paper with a red pen and hand it back to you. Instead we’ll have a custom teaching session geared towards your needs and priorities.

You can expect the Studio to be an encouraging, welcoming space for everyone—regardless of how much you love (or hate) writing. You are welcome to hang out in the Studio and work on homework, or just pop in for a quick question and a Jolly Rancher. Come on in. Everyone is welcome.

CAN I REALLY BRING IN ANY PIECE OF WRITING?

Yes. We’ve helped students with lab reports, academic essays, poems, thesis projects and job applications. Also Fulbright applications, emails, presentations, and resumes. We’ve even seen breakup letters. (Seriously.) If you’re using words and have a question, we can help.

We teach, too

Studio staff often visit classes and team-teach writing sessions with faculty. In fact, Writing Program Director Jennifer Ferrell partners with every Writing class on campus, helping faculty develop effective assignments and helping students become effective critical thinkers. Because we work closely with faculty, we’re aware of assignment demands and expectations.
