The "W" course serves as Cornell's introduction to writing
at the college level. The course is required of all students who earn
the B.A. degree, and they are directed to take the course in their first
year at Cornell. The "W" courses are offered in many fields
of study, including English, History, Sociology, and Russian, so that
students can choose a field of particular interest. (overview)

in Writing courses and other courses involving writing, students can make
