Cornell University has made several requests for Cornell
College to change its name. The dueling
names have confused plenty of people. Cornell College President
Philip Secor (1974-1984), on a trip to Africa, got the best suite
in every hotel because everyone assumed he was from the hotel management
school.
By 1912, according to William Fletcher King, fourth
president of Cornell, the college was open to changing the name
because of the competition for the Cornell name and because it sounded
too close to another Iowa college, Grinnell. Cornell of Iowa was
willing to change its name if the right person -- with enough money
-- came along. It would have taken $250,000 to $500,000, King wrote.
There were no takers.
