Productions & Projects

Mainstage Productions

Each year the Theatre Department stages four main productions. We tackle a broad range of performances ranging from standards like Shakespeare and Sondheim, to edgy and contemporary works such as Big Love and Marat/Sade. We also stage an opera each year as part of our Lyric Theatre collaboration with the Cornell Music Department. See a calendar for our current season or a list of our recent productions

Guest Artist Program

Our Guest Artist Program brings professionals from all areas of theatre into our classrooms and productions. The program has evolved from a long-standing relationship with Riverside Theatre, Iowa City’s resident performing company, and its artistic directors Ron Clark and Jody Hovland.

Student and Non-Mainstage Productions

Typically, the department sponsors at least three student-directed productions (usually undertaken by their directors for academic credit) and an occasional special project, such as a staged reading.  In addition, the Student Theatre Council (STC) takes on three or four additional projects per year, including the Gumbo Project and an end-of-year show. Open Mic Night

Music, poetry, monologues, stand-up comedy, dance, and other imaginative works take the stage at 10:45 PM on the second Tuesday of each block in the Black Box Theatre in Armstrong Hall. No auditions or signup are necessary, just show up to watch or bring along a piece to perform.
