Tartuffe
Playwright: Moliere
Director: Jody Hovland
The original version of Tartuffe premiered in Paris 1664,
but was immediately banned for its perceived attack on Christian
morality and religion. It was not until 1669 that, in a chaged
political and religious climate, the their version of Tartuffe
was finally staged. The play proved to Molere's greatest box office
success.
After production of the play at Cornell, Tartuffe
was reinstalled at Riverside Theatre, Iowa City's resident professional
company, and performed there. This creative partnershp, building
on the artistic possibilites between young theatre artists and
seasoned professionals, was the third collaboration between Riverside
Theatre and Cornell College. The Cherry Orchard launched
the partnership in 1996, followed by Our Town in the spring
of 1999.
