Connecting a Windows 9x PC to ResNet
DIVISION OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
|

There are a few things you need to do in order to ensure your computer is
properly set up.
Here are the instructions to run applications off the network.
If you have any questions at any time please contact the ResNet Coordinator by call x4357.
CHANGE YOUR COMPUTER NAME |
In order to maintain a clean network community we request that all ResNet computers match your username. If this is your second computer on ResNet please end your computer name with _2 (underscore 2). You will be disconnected if your computer name does not match your username.
- Right click on Network Neighborhood and select Properties.
- Select the Identification tab.
- Next to Computer name type in your username (YourUsernameHere). Again, if this is your second computer on ResNet, end this with _2.
- Click OK.
- Click Yes when asked if you would like to Reboot your computer.
|
CHANGE YOUR WORKGROUP TO CORNELL-COLLEGE |
Again, to maintain a clean network community, you must set your Workgroup to CORNELL-COLLEGE.
- Right click on Network Neighborhood and select Properties.
- Select the Identification tab.
- Type CORNELL-COLLEGE next to Workgroup name.
- Click OK.
- Click Yes when asked if you would like to Reboot your computer.
Students have server space in two different locations: your home, and web drive. Your home drive is a good place to put important class work, like Word documents. There are several advantages to using your home drive: you can access these files from any connected computer on campus, and these files are backed up nightly. Any files put in your web drive will show up on the World Wide Web under http://people.cornellcollege.edu/YourUsernameHere. It is also recommended that you map the network drive. We have applications installed on our servers that you can run from your ResNet connection.
These are the instructions for connecting your Home Drive
- Right click on My Computer and select Map Network Drive.
- Next to Drive select H:
- Next to Path type \\srv2\student_home.
- Click the Reconnect at Logon checkbox.
- Click OK.
These are the instructions for connecting your Web Drive
- Right click on My Computer and select Map Network Drive.
- Next to Drive select W:
- Next to Path type \\srv4\YourUsernameHere$ (please note, the $ is required at the end of your User name).
- Click the Reconnect at Logon checkbox.
- Click OK.
These are the instructions for connecting the Applications Drive
- Right click on My Computer and select Map Network Drive.
- Next to Drive select G:
- Next to Path type \\srv2\apps.
- Click the Reconnect at Logon checkbox.
- Click OK.
- Right click on Network Neighborhood and select Properties.
- In the Configuration tab you should see:
- Client for Microsoft Networks
- Your Ethernet Card
- TCP/IP
- If you see anything else there highlight it and click Remove
- Verify that under Primary Network Logon, Client for Microsoft Networks is selected.
- Click on Client for Microsoft Networks and click Properties
- Make sure that:
- Logon to Windows NT Domain is unchecked.
- There is nothing under Windows NT Domain.
- Logon and restore network connections is selected.
- Click OK, answer Yes if asked to reboot and continue on with the next step.
- Double click on TCP/IP
- On the IP Address tab verify that Obtain an IP Address Automatically is selected.
- On the WINS Configuration tab verify that Use DHCP for WINS Resolution is selected.
- On the Gateway tab verify that there are no Installed gateways. If there is, select it and click Remove.
- On the DNS Configuration tab verify that Disable DNS is selected.
- On the Bindings tab verify that Client for Microsoft Networks is checked.
- Click OK, answer Yes if asked to restart computer.
When you start up your computer you should come to a screen that says Enter Windows Password. Your standard network username and password (used when checking email and logging into the labs) should go into these boxes. If this is the first time you have done this you will be prompted to verify your password.
If you ever change your College password you will have to use your old password to logon then go to Start->Settings->Control Panel and double click on Passwords. Click Change Windows Password and then enter your old password and your next password twice. From now on you will be able to use your new standard Cornell password when logging onto your machine.
Because Cornell does not have enough licenses for every student on campus to any application at the same time you have to install KeyAccess. KeyAccess allows us to limit how many applications can be run concurrently. If you do not have KeyAccess installed you will not be able to run these keyed network applications.
- Click Start and select Run.
- In the Run box type \\srv5\install\public.
- Find the folder called KeyServer Client and double click on it.
- Double click on setup.
- Click Next.
- Click Next.
- Answer Yes if it asks to store program information in the registry.
- On the Client Network Connection window press Continue.
- Click Close.
- You now have KeyAccess installed on your computer. Every time you reboot your computer, or when a keyed application is run, KeyAccess will start.
