Frequently Asked Questions

DIVISION OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

All residence hall rooms have data connections. Students will be able to connect to the Internet, send and receive E-mail, and communicate electronically from their rooms. This FAQs sheet has been prepared to answer the most commonly asked questions about the Cornell ResNet.

Am I required to bring a computer to Cornell?
No, but we strongly recommend that you do.

Will professors expect me to use a computer for class work and assignments?
Yes. All instructors will require work to be done on word processors and most require that you do assignments using spreadsheets, databases, Internet resources, and e-mail as well as software specific to a particular course.

If I bring a computer, what kind will work on the Cornell network?
The specifications for computers on the Cornell network are listed below:

HARDWARE

  • A computer running a network ready operating system, such as Windows Vista, XP, and Apple OS X.
  • A 10 or 10/100 Ethernet adapter
  • A category-5 (RJ-45) network cable (25' recommended length)

SOFTWARE

  • All critical Windows updates and service packs (Microsoft-based operating systems only)
  • Cornell's McAfee Antivirus* (FREE to all Cornell students)
  • Cisco Clean Access*

*Can be downloaded when you arrive on campus

Many of our students are now bringing wireless capable devices. These devices can be used in the Cole Library, Commons, limited spaces in College and Law Halls.

Should I insure my computer when I bring it to Cornell?
Yes. Cornell cannot be responsible if your personal equipment is damaged or stolen. Generally, your parent’s home owner’s insurance will cover your personal effects while at school or additional coverage is available for a small fee. Contact your insurance agent before arriving at Cornell.

What will it cost to connect my computer to the network?
There is no cost to connecting your computer to Cornell's residential network (ResNet); however, there are terms and conditions for use (See Terms and Conditions). Network cards, instructions, and software may be available at the bookstore.

I have a notebook computer. Will it connect to the network?
Yes, but it must have a network card.

I already have a network card. Will I have to buy another?
This question will not be answered until we try to connect you to the Cornell network. Some students have had to purchase a different brand after arriving on campus.

Is there anything else I will have to buy to connect to ResNet from my room?
Yes, you have to buy a Category 5 network cable that will reach from your wall connection to where ever you will use your computer in your room. These can be purchased at the bookstore.

Should I have a surge protector?
Yes. You should have a surge protector for any electronic equipment in your room.

Can I get on the Internet from my room without using a modem?
Yes. Once you are connected to the Cornell ResNet, you will have access to the Internet without using a modem or outside Internet Service Provider.

Will I have an e-mail address?
Yes. All Cornell students, faculty, and staff have email accounts. You will get your e-mail address at Validation Day at the beginning of Block One in the fall. You will keep the same e-mail address all four years at Cornell.

How can I print from my computer in my room?
If you do not have a printer in your room you can send print jobs to Cornell Printer-copiers located in several areas across campus.

For instructions on directing your printing to one of these printers <click here>.

What software should I have on my computer?
You should have software compatible with Microsoft Office which is the College's standard office application, Microsoft's Internet Explorer, and one of the major antivirus software applications (Norton or McAfee). Cornell provides a free annual subscription to McAfee's virus protection program for all currently enrolled students.

If I have questions about technology on the Cornell campus, where would I find the answers?
There are three ways to get support on technology issues. The fastest way to get information about technology issues or problems is to use our Support FAQ. Another way is to submit a Work Order Request which may take some time to get a response. If you have tried these two and your problem is not solved, you may call Information Technology for further assistance.

What is the address of the Cornell Web Page?
The Cornell Web Page is at www.cornellcollege.edu. You can find additional information about Cornell Information Technology and ResNet in the Office of Information Technology section of the Web Page.

Computers are expensive. Are they really that important in college?
Yes. Most faculty require that papers and other submissions be in a printed or electronic format and will expect you to do electronic research and communicate using E-mail. Having a computer will make this easier and more convenient for you.
