Frequently Asked Questions

DIVISION OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Due to the risk of virus storms and network worm attacks, Cornell's IT staff has installed a solution to prevent "infected" systems from gaining access to the campus network and infecting our systems.

Students are now required to validate and authenticate their access to the college network through Cisco’s Clean Access services. The network username and password you receive at Validation will be required and your computer will need to be set up correctly in order to log in. The validation solution is targeted towards WindowsXP and Windows 2000 machines. Other Windows users, Macintosh users, and Linux users will have to use the solution only to authenticate to the network. Students will not be able to access the network until they have “authenticated” (or told the network who they are). You can find more information on how to connect using Clean Access here.

<Click here> for Frequently Asked Questions concerning Cisco's Clean Access services.

What do I do if my computer will not come on?
First, check to be sure your monitor is turned on. Next, check to be sure that your equipment is plugged in. If it is, check and be sure that the jack that it is plugged into works by plugging another device like a TV or radio in to the jack. If the AC outlet appears to be good and all of your devices are plugged in and turned on, chances are the devices that are not coming on may be bad and need expert attention. (See the list of Local Computer Shops for help.)

What do I do if my computer will not connect to Cornell's network?
If you have completed the online registration of your computer, you may want to check out the Troubleshooting Your ResNet Connection for additional instructions.

Where can I get virus protection and Windows security patches?
Each ResNet student will be allowed to use McAfee Virus protection while enrolled at the College. A free copy can be downloaded at https://secure.cornellcollege.edu/software/. A valid username and password are required.

Each ResNet student running Microsoft Windows is required to keep their operating systems up-to-date on security patches. The latest patches can be downloaded a applied from http://www.microsoft.com. For instructions on installing Windows updates <Click here>.

Why did my system lock up after I installed McAfee Anti-Virus software?
If you already had antivirus software on your computer and decided to take advantage of Cornell’s arrangement with McAfee and downloaded and installed McAfee, you should remove your old antivirus software since the two are most likely conflicting causing the “lock up.” You can remove the old antivirus software by either using the uninstall program that came with your software or go to Control Panel and use the Add/Remove Software feature there.

What do I do if my computer connects to Cornell's network but not to the Internet?
There are many reasons you can not connect to the Internet. The most common is the computer not being signed up for ResNet. Other problems can include bad ports, bad network card, and software (such as firewalls or spyware) that is conflicting with network communications. If you are having trouble connecting and you are signed up for ResNet use our instructions on Firewalls and Spyware. You can request email support from ResNet by using our Work Order Request form. Contacting IT directly at extension 4357 should be your last resort.

I just installed the Cisco Clean Access Agent so why is my computer now running slower and I am having problems with other applications?
Although Cisco’s Clean Access agent is a program required to run in order for students to connect to Cornell’s network from their dormitory rooms, testing and experience shows that it does not result in adverse effects on a computer’s performance. Since this is generally caused by another program conflicting with Service Patch 2 (SP2), we recommend that you look at other programs on your computer before accusing the Clean Access agent.

We have seen where uninstalling SP2, reinstalling Windows XP, and then reinstalling SP2 has corrected this problem.

What do I do if I forget my username and password?
If you forget your username or password, you will need to come to Information Technology at Law Hall, Room 312 and show your ID. Usernames and passwords can not be given over the phone or to someone other than user.

I need to map my network drive, how do I do that?
Follow the directions on the ResNet Web Page under Get Connected and your operating system. There will be directions for "Map Network Drives", however be sure to follow ALL the directions on the page before doing the Map Network Drives step.

How do I install network software on my personal computer?
Make sure your Ethernet card is properly installed and your 10BaseT cable is plugged into the proper wall outlet. Then use our Windows XP Configuration instructions to install TCP/IP on your computer.

How do I print to a Cornell network printer?
Follow the directions on the ResNet web page under Get Connected and your operating system (network printing is not available from Macintoshes). Follow the directions under the "Connect To A Networked Printer" heading or <click here>. If you have difficulties connecting to the server be sure to follow ALL directions on that page.

How do I set up a wireless router on Cornell's network?
If you connect a router to the Cornell network, remember it is very important to manage your router. We suggest that you only allow certain Mac addresses to connect and use your router. The instructions for implementing this will be outlined in the manufacturer's instruction manual or online documentation. You can use these general instructions to connect a router to the Cornell network.

How do I set up my wireless device to connect to Cornell's network?
You can use our Wireless Network instruction page for directions on setting up your device (generally a laptop or pda) for wireless access to Cornell's network.

How do I get additional help?
If you have tried the online tutorials and still have trouble connecting to ResNet, we have trained staff available to assist you. You may call (319-895-4357) or email us (resnet@cornellcollege.edu) with any questions you have.

How do I find my IP address?
Finding your IP address differs among operating systems. For instructions on finding your IP address in Windows XP <click here>.

What does ResNet provide?
ResNet provides network service and support to all students in College residence halls.

How do I get ResNet?
If you are living in an on-campus residence hall you have access to ResNet by simply plugging in a networked capable computer into a network jack in your resident hall room. When you open a browser you will be directed to the ResNet Registration (Cisco's Clean Access) page. Once you enter your Cornell-provided username and password your computer will be checked to be sure you are current on your virus protection and Windows security patches. If you are current, you will be connected to the Cornell network. If you are not current, you will be directed to a web page where you can get the latest McAfee virus protection and Windows security patch.

For more information on Cisco's Clean Access <click here>.

What does ResNet Cost?
Currently, there is no charge for subscribing to ResNet.

What hardware do I need to connect to ResNet?
To connect to ResNet, you will need a network card and a network cable. Most computers already come with a network card installed. Cables can be purchased at the campus bookstore or an any store that sells computer supplies.

Why is my connection so slow?
Your connection may be slow because of a hardware problem with your computer or because your computer has virus or security issues. Also, the increased use of peer-to-peer (p2p) applications has slowed the network considerably.

Which jack should I plug my cable into?
The jack you plug your network cable into depends on which building you live in. There is a difference between the jack your telephone plugs into and the jack your network cable plugs in to. The connector on your network cable is larger than the connector for your telephone. Below is a labeled picture of the two:
