Summary of Technology Expectations

DIVISION OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Cornell College has wired the campus with fiber-optic cable, enabling students to connect to the network from their residence hall rooms. Students are also able to run some software on the network while connect through ResNet. This connection also provides the capability for students to check email and surf the net from their rooms.

Access to Cornell’s Network Resources

  1. It is a privilege not a right.
  2. The guidelines are not exhaustive therefore use common sense when using the resources in a responsible way.
  3. It is your responsibility to keep up-to-date as changes are posted to the ResNet and IT web pages.

Using Software and Other Copyrighted Materials Legally

  1. Respect intellectual labor and creativity in all media.
  2. Cornell's computing policies prohibit the illegal sharing of copyrighted materials and support the efforts of Define the Line initiative and the EDUCOM Code on software and intellectual rights.
  3. Respect Cornell security procedures and implement your own to protect your own work and resources.

Responsibilities

  1. You are responsible for all traffic in and out of the port in your room as well as your computer
  2. It is your responsibility to become familiar with the ResNet Terms and Conditions and all technology policies.
  3. Only registered computer systems may be attached to your port.
  4. You are not allowed to attach any device that interferes with Cornell’s network.
  5. Some services such as ftp and telnet are allowed within the Cornell campus but not off campus.

Guideline for Network Use

  1. You are not allowed to use someone’s computer, computer accounts, and/or networks without their permission, this includes capturing passwords and or data not meant for you.
  2. You must act responsibly and comply with all College, Local, State, and Federal laws and regulations.
  3. Unauthorized entry or modification of any computer system and its contents is a violation of State and Federal law and will be dealt with by the Dean of Students, Academic Affairs, and the District Attorney’s office.
  4. Forgery or misrepresentation of one’s identity in any communication form is a violation of campus network policy and may violate State and Federal law.
  5. Violating these policies and/or guidelines will result in the loss of network privileges while at Cornell College.
  6. Cornell is not responsible for data loss due to viruses, spy ware, or any other hardware, software or network failures.
  7. You are required to download and install the Clean Access Agent if you run Windows XP, Vista, and Mac OSX.
  8. Currently, it is permitted to connect a personal wireless router to the Cornell network in your residense hall room. If you choose to do this it is very important to manage your router properly. The following setup procedures must be followed when using a wireless router.

    • The SSID must NOT be broadcast
    • The SSID must be secured using WPA key, or similar technology.
    • As an added security measure, we suggest that you lock your wireless router down to only allow certain Mac addresses to connect to your router.
Routers that do not adhere to the above requirements will be removed from the network.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) are available on the ResNet web page to assist you with problems or questions. If you do not see your question, use our Work Order Request form to get answers.

While Information Technology is available to assist students in getting connected to ResNet, we are not responsible for maintaining or repairing student computers. If you have difficulty connecting to ResNet you can call for assistance. However, if it is determined that your computer needs service you may be referred to several local computer shops in the greater Cedar Rapids area. (See list of Local Computer Shops for technical services on personal computers.)
