Building Updates

**The following information was posted during the summer of 2013 to showcase the bathroom renovations.  This is here for reference purposes only and is no longer being updated.**

Olin Hall has undergone a significant transformation in the course of three summers. In the summer of 2011, we replaced all of the 3rd and 4th floor windows. In the summer of 2012, we replaced the windows in the rest of the building and installed a new heating system, complete with individual thermostats in each room.

This summer, significant changes to the bathrooms are underway and plans are in place to update the lounge.

Overall bathroom design

Through this project. all of the showers will include a small, private changing area. We are adding sinks by the row of showers.

Pictures of the construction

The following pictures give a sense of the extent of the work. The bathrooms were completely gutted in preparation for their expansion (as seen in pictures #1-3). You can see the private changing area that is being created for each shower (in picture #4). More pictures will be added throughout the summer. Click on any of the images for a larger view.

Olin 1st floor bathrooms

On this floor, rooms 123 and 125 were taken offline and are no longer available for student occupancy. A portion of 121 was removed as well, converting that room from a triple into a double. The new bathroom layout will have the entrance in the same place as it was previously. The toilet stalls and the bank of sinks across from the entrance will be updated but will remain in the same approximate place as they were previously. As you head to the right, you will enter the showering area. In the hallway by 121, we will add a new trash and recycling center.

On the floor, the bathroom and laundry room are swapping spaces. The new bathroom layout will have the entrance in the same place as where the entrance to the laundry room was. The toilet stalls will be located to the left. As you head to the right, you will enter the showering area.

A diagram showing the updated laundry room will be posted soon. At this time, we do not anticipate adding more washers or dryers to Olin. We will relocate the existing machines to a new, updated space (where the bathroom was previously).

1st floor lounge

Plans are in place to expand the 1st floor lounge, providing more social space as well as a quiet study space. Because of the scope of the bathroom project, the updates to the lounge will not be able to take place over the summer. Our current plan is summer 2014; we will update the residents as we know more.

The intent would be to move walls to incorporate the existing tiled area into the lounge and then to convert the existing RA office into an individual or group study space. Students would still enter the building through the same doors but then would enter the 1st floor through a newly-built door (in the existing brick wall).
