Getting You and Your Bike to Mount Vernon If You Don't Drive
If you plan to come by air, you should fly to Cedar Rapids (CID).
Airlines generally charge a significant fee each way to carry a boxed bicycle without any guarantee that it will arrive on the same plane you do.
If you prefer to ship your bike, you may ship it to Craig's house, 850 13th Avenue SW, Mount Vernon, IA 52314 (phone: 319-895-8103).
Sports Express, FedEx and UPS ship boxed bikes. Local bike shops will generally box and ship your bike for a fee.

SAFETY FIRST! - RIDE RIGHT!

Please visit the Ride Right pages at RAGBRAI.org

Please watch the Register's Safety Video here before you leave home.

The Rights and Duties of Bicyclists

League of American Bicyclists certified traffic cycling instructors demonstrate the rights and duties of cyclists in the United States. The video shows cyclists acting as drivers of vehicles making normal vehicular maneuvers including lane control, lane sharing, left and right turns, through movements and a freeway ramp crossing. This video is intended to show cyclists and motorists how it looks when cyclists act and are treated as vehicle drivers in normal urban traffic in the City of Long Beach, California. These skills are taught in by the League of American Bicyclists, Bike Ed program.

Test Your Awareness

What you should bring on RamBRAI

Pack your gear (other than your bike) in some sort of soft duffel bags.

Bike Gear:

  1. Bicycle: limited to one per rider (one tandem per two riders). Be sure your bicycle is tuned and ready for the ride. Check your tires and tubes. If in doubt, replace them before the ride.
  2. Helmet (required of all riders when riding).
  3. Bike or helmet mirror (highly recommended for crowded riding conditions).
  4. Water Bottles. Dehydration and Sunburn are the greatest threats to your happiness!
  5. Cable and lock for bicycle. (You probably won't use them, but you could if you wanted to.)
  6. Spare tube (or patch kit) and portable inflation device (so you can fix your own flats).
  7. Plastic bags (keep your bike seat dry when it rains; keep your hands clean when you replace your chain)
  8. Small bike bag or "fanny pack" to carry items mentioned above as well as cash, sunscreen, ibuprofen, pre-moistened towelettes, toilet paper, etc.

Camping Gear:

  1. Tent
  2. Sleeping bag (or just a sheet), pillow, and air mattress or foam pad
  3. Flashlight or headlamp
  4. Clothes pins and line
  5. Folding lawn or bag chair (strictly optional)

Personal Gear:

  1. On-bike Clothes: Cycling shorts, shoes & socks, jerseys or T-shirts, windbreaker
  2. Off-bike Clothes: e.g., sandals, shorts, swim suit, sweater or sweatshirt, rain gear
  3. Sunglasses & Sun Screen! Dehydration and Sunburn are the greatest threats to your happiness!
  4. Personal medications & your favorite anti-inflammatory drug, e.g., ibuprofen, naproxin sodium
  5. Toilet articles: toilet paper, tooth brush, tooth paste, soap, shampoo, & towels
  6. Driver's License & Health Insurance Card
  7. Cash & a Credit Card

Expenses on the Road: You will have numerous opportunities to spend money on biking gear, clothes, souvenirs, food and drink. In addition to his share of the free soft drinks, snacks, fruit, etc. provided daily at our overnight locations, I (Craig) typically spend $4 to $7 for breakfast (typically pancakes in a fire station), $6 to $9 for dinner (typically lasagna in a church basement), and $5 to $10 grazing in between (typically a lot of Gatorade and pie)--about $25 per day. Even this estimate may be generous. In 2008 I put a $20 bill in my wallet for each day of the ride and had change left over. (Average daily expenses $17.27.) You can spend more, especially if you frequent restaurants and drinking establishments. Except in restaurants, food and drink generally require cash. Most of the major vendors of bike repairs, accessories, souvenirs, clothing, etc., accept VISA and MasterCard.

Bike Repair, First Aid, Sag Service, Liability, and Insurance: Facilities for bike repair and first aid are available at the campgrounds in each host community. Ambulance services are available throughout the ride for serious injuries. Some bike shops maintain mobile repair units along the route each day as indicated on your route maps. Bike repair may require a wait, but service charges have always struck me as very reasonable. Sag service is provided by the Register. Neither Cornell nor the individual organizers (e.g., Craig & A-D) accept any liability for your personal health and safety. You waive all claims against anyone associated with RAGBRAI® when you sign the release required by the Register. The Register provides secondary "emergency medical insurance" for riders. I haven't seen the policy and can't make any representations about coverage, exclusions or limits of liability. Contact the Register if you think you may have a claim, but don't make assumptions about coverage.

What You Get for Your Fees: The RAGBRAI® Fee supports the official RAGBRAI® establishment that causes this event to take place every year and gets you an embroidered patch, insurance coverage, route marking, route maps, sag service, campgrounds, free newspapers, possible food discounts, and an opportunity to win stuff. The Cornell Support Fee gets you, your bike, and your luggage from Mount Vernon, through the ride, and back to Mount Vernon; defrays the expenses of our fabulous wagon masters; provides modest gifts for our overnight hosts; and provides you lots of free snacks and soft drinks at each overnight stop.

Questions: Contact Craig: e-mail: callin@cornellcollege.edu; or phone 319-895-8103 (home), 319-895-4278 (office).
