The exercise science major at Cornell College is designed to provide students with a solid academic foundation in the psychological and physiological principles of human physical performance. This is a flexible, science-based curriculum designed for students wishing to pursue a wide range of goals including working in the health and fitness industry, health professions including pre-medicine and pre-physical therapy as well as graduate study in exercise science.

Students completing this major, as well as coursework for the Secondary or Elementary Education Major, may apply the State of Iowa, as well as other states, for teaching licensure in Elementary Physical and/or Secondary Physical Education. Physical Education Teacher Preparation majors further complete courses in methodology, motor learning, anatomical kinesiology, adapted physical education and field experiences prior to student teaching Many students also complete coursework for State of Iowa Coaching Authorization.

Many students are interested in qualifying to be a head coach or an assistant coach in any sport offered in the Iowa public schools. The courses to meet the Authorization and Endorsement requirements.
