The Cornell Leadership Certificate Program is a non-credit certificate bearing program. Based on the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, the program includes eight components, one for each of the "seven Cs" associated with the Social Change Model plus a capstone project. Students will be formally recognized and awarded a certificate for each component that they complete. Special recognition will be given to those completing all seven Cs and the capstone project.
Completing a C
In order to receive a certificate in a C, a participant must complete four experiences. One of these experiences is a required workshop set by the program facilitators. The workshop will provide conceptual background and skill-building exercises associated with one of the seven Cs. These workshops have a fixed schedule throughout the year. The other three experiences are crafted by the participant and approved by the facilitator for the particular C. These experiences draw upon activities that student is involved in across campus, and could include attending events on campus, involvement in service projects, or participation in student organizations. Students are asked to reflect upon those experiences and connect their work to the concepts introduced in the facilitated workshop. A student can complete the full program over the course of four years. However, there are deadlines for the individual C components once a student has attended a workshop.
The reflection on the required workshop must be submitted within two weeks of the workshop. All components of a C must be completed and submitted by the end of the next semester following the semester you attended the workshop for that C (Monday of Week 1 of Block 4 or 8).
(1) Student attends "Collaboration" workshop in February.
(2) Student submits reflection on workshop within the next two weeks.
(3) During rest of the spring semester and the following fall semester, student completes three experiences related to the material covered in the "Collaboration" workshop. Student completes the final reflection by Week 1, Block 4 of next academic year.
Once a student has completed the necessary experiences from all seven Cs, he or she can begin the capstone project. This project is designed to tie together and apply the experiences from all seven Cs. To discuss and get approval for a capstone project, students should set up an appointment with Heidi Levine.
Social Change Model of Leadership Development
The Social Change Model of Leadership Development was developed by the Higher Education Research Institute of UCLA. The model emphasizes creating change through developing a deeper understanding of yourself and others. A key facet of the model is the recognition of leadership as a process rather than a position.
The model emphasizes seven individual, group, and societal values that lead to change, referred to as the "seven Cs".
Consciousness of Self
