Cornell College Phone Services will assist you in every way possible to effectively utilize your telephone, voicemail and telecommunication needs.

 


General Phone Information

How to Make an On-Campus Call

To make an on-campus call, pick up your phone and press the four-digit extension number you would like to call.

How to Make a Local Call

Mt Vernon, Cedar Rapids, Lisbon, Marion and Hiawatha

To make a call that is local:
1. Press "9" to get an outside line.
2. Press the seven-digit phone number you would like to call.

How to Make a Call Using a Calling Card

To make a call using a calling card, review the directions on the back of your card. Each long distance calling card has different instructions. Contact your long distance calling card company for more information.

 


Long Distance & Collect Calls

How to Make a Long Distance Call

To make a call that is long distance (or requires an area code as part of the phone number):
  1. Press "9" to get an outside line.
  2. After the tone, enter 1 + area code + number.
  3. After the tone enter your 7 digit access code.

 

How to Make a Collect Call

To make a collect call, press "9" + 1-800-COLLECT (265-5328) or "9" + 1-800-CALL-ATT (255-5288). Follow the providers instructions.

 

How to Make an International Call

You must apply for International calling through Phone Services at extension 4357
  1. Press "9" to get an outside line.
  2. After the tone enter 011 + international country code + city code + number.
  3. After the tone enter your 7 digit access code.

To Place a Call on Hold

  1. Press your hookswitch. You will hear the transfer dial tone.
  2. Dial 31 and hang-up.

 

To Retrieve a Call on Hold

  1. Lift your handset.
  2. Dial #31 to be reconnected to the caller.

 

To Retrieve a Call on Hold from Another Phone

  1. Lift your handset.
  2. Dial #32 and the extension number where the call was placed on hold.

 

To Transfer a Call to Another Extension

  1. While you are connected to the outside party, press your hookswitch or flash key.
  2. Dial the four-digit extension number of the person you wish to transfer to.
  3. Announce the call.
  4. Hang up to complete the transfer.

 

To Make a Conference Call

This can only be done from a Superset.

  1. Make the first call. When connected to the first call, press your hook switch or flash key.
  2. Make the second call. After the second call has answered, press the hook switch or flash key to join the party.
  3. Repeat the above steps to add more parties.

 

On Campus Business Long Distance Access Codes

To request a long distance access code to use for business purposes on campus you must request one through your department head.

 

How to Pick up Someone else's Phone from Your Phone

Press *65 and the extension you would like to pick up. If you are in a pick up group, press *66. (To create a pick up group, contact Phone Services at extension 4357)

 

How to Prevent Fraud of Your Long Distance Code

Under no circumstances should you give your long distance access code to anyone. If you believe someone has stolen your code or believe that your card is lost, notify Phone Services at extension 4357 immediately so your old code can be canceled and a new code issued.

 


Your Voicemail Box

How to Set Up Your Voicemail Box

  1. You will be emailed a notification that your voicemail account has been setup.
  2. Dial 7930 to access your voicemail account.
  3. Change the temporary pin to a new 6 digit pin.
  4. Create a greeting for your voicemail account.
  5. Hangup.

 

Reviewing a Voicemail Message with an email client

Note - Your computer will need to have speakers so you may hear the voicemail.

  1. If you use Outlook 2007 or use Outlook Web Access with Internet Explorer, you should be able to play the voicemail from the review pane.
  2. Any other email client, the voicemail will be embedded as an attachment.

 

Reviewing a Voicemail Message from a Campus phone

  1. Dial 7930.
  2. Enter your PIN.
  3. Say Voicemail.
  4. Play Voicemail

 

To Retrieve Voicemail from off Campus

  1. Dial 895-4000
  2. Press #
  3. Press #
  4. Dial 7930
  5. Follow the prompts to access your voicemail

 

Outlook Voice Access

You may now access your email, voice mail, contacts, and calendar information from a touch tone phone.

  1. Dial 319-895-4444
  2. Enter your extension.
  3. Enter you PIN.
  4. Say Email, Voicemail, Contacts, or Calendar.
  5. Say Main Menu to return to the default menu.

 

Reporting Voicemail and Telephone Problems

If you don't understand a procedure or your telephone is not working properly, report the incident to Phone Service Law Hall 312.

 

 


Conference Calling

From a Single Line Phone

  1. Make the first call, when connected press hookswitch or flash key
  2. Make the next call, when connected press hookswitch or flash key
  3. Continue step 2 until all parties have been called
  4. Dial 30 to Join all parties in conference

 

From a Superset Phone

  1. Make the first call, when connected press trans/conf button
  2. Make the next call, when connected press trans/conf button this will join all parties
  3. To add another party press trans/conf button and dial number, when connected press trans /conf button, this will join all parties
  4. Continue with step 3 until all parties have been called

Note: Up to 8 parties may be in a conference at one time, with a max of 5 off campus parties.


Send Calls Directly to Voicemail

To Send Calls Directly to Voicemail (on a SuperSet Phone)
1.  Press the SuperSet button.
2.  Press NO until you get to the "Do Not Disturb?"
3.  Press TurnOn
4.  To remove the Do Not Disturb, follow the same directions but press the TurnOff button

To Send Calls Directly to Voicemail (on a Standard Phone)
1.  Press *363
2.  To turn off press #363

Cellular Phone Policy & Check-Out Procedure

Reservations for cellular phones may be made through Phone Services by calling 4357 or emailing phone_services@cornellcollege.edu. The phones are to be picked up and returned to Phone Services located in 312 Law Hall.

The daily rate for renting a cell phone is $2.00. The late fee per phone is an additional $1.00 per day ($3.00 total) until the phone is returned. Actual phone usage (toll calls) will be charged to the designated department account when the monthly billing is received. All calls (local and long distance) made during the period of time the department had possession of the phone will be charged back to that department. The reimbursement of any personal calls is the responsibility of the user's department.

Damage or loss to a cellular phone is the responsibility of the person using the phone. The assigned department will incur actual repair or replacement costs.

 


Frequently Asked Questions

What if I haven't received my long distance access code or I forgot my long distance code?

For a new faculty member, your access code needs to be requested by your department head. If an existing faculty/staff member loses or forgets their access code, the original code will be canceled and a new one established.

 

Where can I get a phone?

You can either buy a phone from an area discount chain or purchase one from Phone Services. These phones will be charged to your department's account. If you wish to purchase a phone through Phone Services, call 4357 with your request and an account number to be billed.

 

I can't set up my voicemail box. Where can I go for help?

If you have any questions or need help setting up your voicemail, please contact the Information Technology Help Desk at extension 4357 or submit a Work Order Request and our staff will assist you as soon as possible.
