Other Email Clients

This page will assist you in connecting Mozilla Thunderbird to the campus email system.  You may also use these settings to connect with other email clients

Mozilla Thunderbird secure connection settings.

  • Open Mozilla Thunderbird
  • If you do not receive a dialog asking you to create a new account, select Account Settings from the Tools menu. Click on the add account button.
  • Select email account.
  • Click Next.

  • Fill in you full name in the Your Name field (Example: John Smith).
  • In the Email Address field type your Cornell email address (Example J-Smith@cornellcollege.edu)
  • Click Next

  • In the Incoming and Outgoing mail server fields, change the entry to "mail1.cornellcollege.edu" without the quotes and select IMAP for the server type
  • Click Next

  • Type your Cornell username where it says Incoming User Name (Example: j-smith)
  • Click Next

  • The Account Name field should be automatically filled in correctly with your Cornell Email address
  • Click Next

  • Look over the information in the box. Make sure it looks correct. If it does, click finish.

  • You may receive an alert about your email server, this will be corrected in later steps and can be ignored.

  • Click on Tools, then Account Settings and finally Server Settings.
  • In the Security Settings section, select SSL.

  • Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) from the left.
  • Click on Edit

  • Check the box for TLS, if available.
  • Hit OK

  • Select Composition & Addressing under your email account
  • Select Use a Different LDAP Server and click the Edit Directories box.

  • In the box that pops up click Add

  • Under Name type Cornell
  • Hostname is ldap.cornellcollege.edu
  • Base DN is ou=Cornell College,dc=cornellcollege,dc=edu
  • Port Number is 389
  • Bind DN is cornell-college\username (ex. cornell-college\j-smith)

  • Click Ok to close the Directory Server Properties dialog
  • Click Ok to close the LDAP Directory Servers dialog
  • Click Ok to close the Account Settings dialog.
  • Click on the Get Mail button on the top left.
