Sesquicentennial

Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian Garry Wills gave the Kollman Memorial Lecture as part of Cornell's sesquicentennial celebrations in 2004. Hailed as one of America's foremost historians, Wills is a distinguished public scholar specializing in cultural and religious history. His lecture on "The Burden of Slavery in American History" was held in King Chapel.

Wills' talk was based on his latest research and his book, Negro President: Jefferson and the Slave Power. While on campus, Wills met with a history class, with 27 Leadership Program students who are reading Certain Trumpets, and with BACO and Sister 4 Sister. His talk coincided with Black History Month.

Wills also wrote the Pulitzer Prize-winning book Lincoln at Gettysburg: The Words that Remade America, as well as A Necessary Evil: A History of American Distrust of Government, and Certain Trumpets: The Nature of Leadership . The latter book served as the inspiration for Les Garner's presidential banner used in formal processions on campus.
