MAJOR AND MINOR REQUIREMENTS
AND GRADUATES
German Major:
A minimum of eight course credits in German at or above the 300-level,
which must include German 301 and either German 302 or 304. A maximum
of two upper-level courses in other areas, approved beforehand by the
Department as relevant to the major, may be substituted for two of the
elective German courses.
The schedule of courses is constructed so that students may begin GER
101 as late as January of their sophomore year and still complete a major
in German. Nevertheless, it is advisable to begin earlier.
German Teaching Major:
This is a major designed for students intending to teach in elementary
or secondary schools. The major consists of at least nine course credits,
to include [1] six in German at or above the 300-level, including both
GER 301 and GER 302; [2] LAL 308 (Language Teaching Methods); [3] either
ENG 311 (Grammar) or LAL 352 (Linguistics; [4] and either GER 281, HIS
315 or HIS 324 (courses in German history). In addition, the student must
enroll in the major in Secondary Education (preferably at the start of
their sophomore year) and complete it. See under Education.
German Studies Minor:
This minor is designed for students who want to explore German culture
and history without necessarily taking a full complement of German language
courses. This minor might also serve as the basis for a Concentration
for the BSS degree. The requirements are GER 205 and at least five additional
course credits chosen from the following list, or other courses approved
beforehand by the Department as relevant to German culture and civilization.
GER 281 (Post-War Germany), 301, 302, 304 (language courses); HIS 304
(16th & 17th centuries), HIS 315 (20th century), HIS 324 (Modern Germany);
MUS 323 (History of Music III), MUS 352 (Wagner's Ring); PHI 306 (Modern
Philosophy), PHI 307 (Marxism); REL 373 (Post-Holocaust Religious Thought)
Minor in German:
This minor is designed for students who want to continue their study
of German language and literature, but cannot fit a full major into their
schedule. The requirements are: five course credits in German at or above
the 300-level, including GER 301.
Graduates
This list is based primarily on the 1997 Cornell College Alumni Directory,
and contains a list of all German majors graduated from Cornell since
1941. This list illustrates the various and diverse occupations which
graduates from liberal arts colleges may have. A German major may become
an interior decorator in Las Vegas, sell snowshoes in Wisconsin, or be
an investment analyst in Connecticut. Yet the professions of business,
education, law and librarianship are the most common. * = not listed in
