DuVal Prize
The DuVal Prize in German is awarded annually in the spring to a student
who has demonstrated excellence in the study of German during that academic
year. The Prize was first awarded in 1992. Professor F. Alan DuVal was
Professor of German at Cornell between 1941 and 1982, except for serving
in the Coast Guard during World War II. He was Chairman of the Department
of Classical and Modern Languages 1959-1982. He is the author of two major
textbooks, Moderne Deutsche Sprachlehre for beginning students
(3 editions: 1967, 1975, 1980) and Wiederholung und Fortsetzung for
intermediate students (1971). He was educated at Simpson College and the
University of Iowa, and has had a long attachment and connection with
the Amana Colonies, writing his doctoral dissertation on the Amana leader
and Werkzeug, Christoph Metz.
