DuVal Prize

The DuVal Prize in German is awarded annually in the spring to a student who has demonstrated excellence in the study of German during that academic year. The Prize was first awarded in 1992. Professor F. Alan DuVal was Professor of German at Cornell between 1941 and 1982, except for serving in the Coast Guard during World War II. He was Chairman of the Department of Classical and Modern Languages 1959-1982. He is the author of two major textbooks, Moderne Deutsche Sprachlehre for beginning students (3 editions: 1967, 1975, 1980) and Wiederholung und Fortsetzung for intermediate students (1971). He was educated at Simpson College and the University of Iowa, and has had a long attachment and connection with the Amana Colonies, writing his doctoral dissertation on the Amana leader and Werkzeug, Christoph Metz.
