Devan Baty, Assistant Professor of French, teaches courses of all levels on French language and French and Francophone culture and literature, including Cultures of France and the Francophone World, Cultures of Francophone Africa, French Medieval Literature, French Renaissance Literature and Introduction to French Literature. In May of 2009, Devan and Steven Sacks of the Department of Religion will team-teach Islam and Postcolonialism in Contemporary Morocco that will take place in Fez, Morocco.  Devan's current research foci are print culture and female readership in early modern France and intercultural mediation by Francophone writers of the Maghreb.  Ph.D., University of Wisconsin; M.A. and B.A., University of Iowa

Diane Crowder, Professor of French and Women's Studies, teaches a range of courses including beginning and intermediate French, 18th and 19th century literature, French Women Writers in Translation, and two contemporary literature courses: Writing as Political Action and Writing as Psychological Analysis.  Diane's research interests cover a wide variety topics related to feminist literary and cultural criticism. While her published research in French literature has focused largely on two authors -- Monique Wittig and Colette -- she continues to refine her courses through reading criticism and works by new authors, including Québecois literature in connection with Cornell's course in Québec.
