Counseling Services

The Director of Counseling Services has the major responsibility for working with students in matters of educational and psychological counseling. Each year, the Director supervises one or two part time assistant counselors and one or two graduate students from the University of Iowa and/or the University of Northern Iowa who are obtaining practicum experience at Cornell.

In addition, academic support services are offered through the Counseling Office. These include: peer content tutoring for most academic subjects; accommodation services for students with learning and/or physical disabilities; and academic advising for students with learning disabilities. Students experiencing academic difficulty are sometimes required to work with the Director. Standardized tests and learning contracts are used to identify problem areas and recommend methods to facilitate academic success.

The Peer Advocate Program is co-sponsored by the Counseling Office and the Office of Student Affairs. Each spring 30 students are selected and trained in the fall by the professional staff. The Peer Advocates facilitate groups formed during Orientation Week to assist new student adjustment to college life in general and Cornell specifically. They also provide information and referral services and peer counseling to the entire Cornell student body.

All services maintain standards of confidentiality required by the American Psychological Association. There is no charge for any of these services.
