Residence Life and Food Service

Cornell is a residential college where students realize the values and utilize the benefits of community living. The majority of students choose to live on campus in one of the traditional residence halls, in an upperclass apartment, or in an affinity house. Both first- and second-year students are expected to live on campus as an ideal means of integrating themselves into college life, meeting many different people, getting fully involved in campus activities, and making friends. Permission to live off campus must be obtained from the Dean of Students.

The various halls, houses, and apartments differ in size, architecture, style, and atmosphere. Some are coed by floor or wing; others are single-sex halls. They are all located within easy walking distance of the classroom buildings, Library, Commons, and Life Sports Center. The oldest residential hall was built in 1885 and the newest in 1984. The residence areas are:

   Single-Sex Coed

Bowman-Carter (women) Merner

Dows (women) Pauley/Rorem

Harlan (women) Pfeiffer

Olin (men) 8th Avenue Apartments

Rood (women) 10th Avenue Apartments

Tarr (men) Affinity Housing

Single rooms are assigned as available and according to seniority. There are no residence halls exclusively for new students because Cornell believes that students in all classes have much to contribute to the overall community in each living unit through their interaction with one another.

An activity fee is collected from all students in each residence hall at the start of the school year in order to provide funding for numerous social, cultural, and educational events in those buildings. Usually such programs are coordinated by both the hall House Councils and the Resident Assistant (RA) staff. RAs live on each floor to help with building management and to offer assistance and direction to their residents. The residence life program is managed by three professional Assistant Directors of Residence Life who are members of the Office of Student Affairs.

Cornell Food Service is provided by the Marriott Corporation. Everyone is required to eat in one of the three dining rooms in The Commons. Students have the option of contracting for either 20 or 14 meals per week (or for seven only if they live off campus). Students may eat as much as they wish at each meal. The Food Service offers a wide variety of foods, including vegetarian and special dietary meals. Choices include salad bar, ethnic theme dinners, and deli bar. The Food Service Director makes every effort to accommodate student requests through daily contact and monthly food committee meetings. Special meals are prepared for holidays and special events.

The Grill and Rathskeller, open throughout the day and evening, offer full meals, pizza, snacks, desserts, and beverages.
