Student Right to Privacy/Parent Right to Information
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student educational records.
- FERPA states that a student enrolled at a school beyond the high school level must sign a release that notifies the school who may have access to the student’s record.
- Billing information is considered part of the student’s educational record, therefore this release must be signed for Cornell College to discuss billing or payment questions with a parent via phone or e-mail.
- The release form can be found on the Registrar’s website at http://www.cornellcollege.edu/registrar/gb-resources-student/index.shtml. Select under Printable Forms “Parental Release”.
