Student Right to Privacy/Parent Right to Information

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student educational records.

1. FERPA states that a student enrolled at a school beyond the high school level must sign a release that notifies the school who may have access to the student’s record.
2. Billing information is considered part of the student’s educational record, therefore this release must be signed for Cornell College to discuss billing or payment questions with a parent via phone or e-mail.
3. The release form can be found on the Registrar’s website at http://www.cornellcollege.edu/registrar/gb-resources-student/index.shtml. Select under Printable Forms “Parental Release”.
