Tortoise beetles are called that because they resemble turtles with their almost circular shape. In the wild, tortoise beetles have a yellow or golden color with transparent edges, but if one is captured it will actually change color to dark brown or black. This may be a defense mechanism or simply because of the stress of being captured.
