K is for Knapweed Root Weevil. This beetle is native to eastern and southern Europe and Asia Minor. This beetle is used as a weed controlant. The Root Weevil prefers to attack spotted knapweed. Their larvae bore into roots and may kill the plant. Feeding by older larvae causes considerable damage to the root, especially to small plants or plants containing multiple larvae. Small numbers of Root Weevils still remain in Europe today, but they can be found mostly in Colorado and Montana. The Root Weevil is sold as a biological control of weeds. A carton of 105 Root Weevils sells for $150. |
