H is for Honey Bee. Honey Bees are a non-native insect. This means they did not originate in the United States.. Honey Bees are easy to spot in the summer time on and around wild flowers. Many hikers in the Rocky Mountains enjoy watching the Honey Bees pollinate the many wild flowers along the trails. Honey Bees eat pollen and nectar. Nectar is a sweet liquid made up mostly of sucrose. The sucrose is converted inside the bee into glucose and fructose. This is then transfered to another bee and delivered to the honey comb to become honey. Honey Bees can fly up to 60 miles in one day gathering food. The queen bee lays 1500 eggs/day. This is approximately 200,000 eggs/year. |
