G is for Gluphisia septentrionis. Gluphisia septentrionis is a moth of Colorado that does not have a common name. Instead it goes by its scientific name. This type of moth emerges from May to August. Gluphisia septentrionis is a world class drinker. It was once observed drinking continuously for nearly three and a half hours, consuming more than 600 times its body mass. The reason it drinks so much is because it needs the salt from the water. The moth does not need all of the salt for himself, but instead as part of his nuptial gift for mating. |
