The alderfly can be found near ponds or streams. These blackish-gray insects are less than 24 mm long. They can be idenified by their blunt heads with no tong-like mandables and an antenna half the length of it's body. The alderfly's two sets of wings help it to navigate it's environment. Alderflies mate among the plants near ponds or streams. The mother than lays a few hundred eggs in the nearby water. When the larvae emerge, they consume as many pond animals as possble with their ice-pick shaped mouthparts. After the larvae have filled themselves, they form a silk coccoon on the water line and remain in the cocoon as a pupa until they emerge as adult alderflies.
