Maku is what Africans call witchetty grubs. They cook them over a fire and say they taste like scrambled eggs. Witchetty grubs are the larval stage of the gray cossid moth. They live in the roots of the witchetty bush (after which they are named) for many years becoming fat and juicy! The grubs are also used by Africans to treat burns. They are crushed and pounded and placed on the burn underneath a bark bandage.
