A
JAPAN

Restaurants in Tokyo, Japan still serve many dishes that contain insects:

  • hachi-no-ko - boiled wasp larvae
  • zaza-mushi - aquatic insect larvae
  • inago - fried rice-field grasshoppers
  • semi - fried cicada (pictured at left)
  • sangi - fried silk moth pupae

It seems that the Japanese have been eating insects for centuries, beginning high in the Japanese Alps, where there was an abundance of people but a shortage of animal protein. There were a lot of aquatic insects (that were high in protein) in the area, so they were eaten regularly.
