Horse fly
The female horsefly has knifelike mouth parts that she uses to pierce the thick skin of a horse. Once she pierces the horse and the blood begins to flow, she'll suck up the blood with her spongelike tongue. She needs to drink the blood in order to lay her eggs. Because the blood is free flowing, a horse can loose up to a 1/2 of blood per day! The male horsefly, however, feeds on flowers, not horses.
