Education Policy Symposium

Mechanics and Challenges of Implementing No Child Left Behind in Iowa

On Monday, November 16, the Berry Center co-sponsored an Education Policy Symposium with Cornell's Departments of Education and Politics. Featured speakers were Tom Deeter, Ph.D., an Educational Program Consultant from the Iowa Department of Education, and John Scott, MA, the Title III Consultant from the Iowa Department of Education. Both speakers have had experience as classroom teachers before serving with the State of Iowa's Department of Education.

Deeter addressed the mechanics of testing and classification under the No Child Left Behind legislation and Scott spoke on how this testing impacts English as a Second Language students. The symposium was attended by students in education classes as well as students in Professor Steven Hemelt's public policy course.
