Dr. Suparna Bhaskaran

On May 15, 2009, Dr. Suparna Bhaskaran gave a public talk, “Covering the Uninsured: State Led Healthcare Policy Initiatives,” which explored current healthcare reforms. While many Americans continue to hope for a national solution to address the lack of national healthcare, many states have taken the lead on various healthcare reforms. Dr. Bhaskaran provided a comparative analysis of state health care policies, specifically looking at what is being done in the state of Ohio compared to states such as Massachusetts where individual mandates have been enacted to achieve universal coverage. This talk also presented the perspectives and experiences of under- and uninsured individuals in relation to health care reforms. Students in professor Tori Barnes-Brus's SOC315: Wealth, Power, and Inequality were required to attend her healthcare lecture.  Dr. Bhaskaran was also in professor Erin Davis's SOC365:Sexualities course.

Dr. Bhaskaran is currently a Healthcare Policy Analyst and Education Liaison for the State of Ohio. She has also been a professor of Women’s Studies at Antioch College and Ohio Wesleyan University. Her specialties include Healthcare Policy and Activism, Transnational Feminisms, Sexuality Studies, South Asia, and Cultural Anthropology.
