Wallace earns all-league honors for fourth consecutive season
MOUNT VERNON - Cornell senior midfielder Brianna Wallace (Eldridge/North Scott) and sophomore forward Leanne Carberry (Idledale, Colo./Bear Creek) have been named to the All-Iowa Conference Women's Soccer Second Team.
Sophomore forward Kobina Essandoh (Accra, Ghana/Presec) represented Cornell on the men's side, earning honorable mention honors.
Wallace received second team accolades for the fourth consecutive season. She is the 19th women's soccer player in IIAC history to be named all-conference four years.
Wallace led the Rams with 10 assists and was second on the team with five goals and 20 points. She finished second in the league with 0.56 assists per game. Wallace, who played in 71 career matches, ranks fourth on Cornell's career list in goals (31), fifth in points (88) and sixth in assists (26).
Carberry, also a second team pick in 2007, established herself as one of the league's top offensive threats this season. She tallied team highs with 15 goals, 38 points, 66 shot attempts and five game-winning goals and was second on the team with eight assists.
Carberry had four multi-goal matches, including two hat tricks. She finished second in the IIAC in shots per game (3.67), points per game (2.11), goals per game (0.83) and game-winning goals. Carberry's 38 points this fall are the most by a Cornell player since 2001 and rank fifth in single-season school history.
Wallace and Carberry helped guide the Rams to an 8-10 overall mark and a berth in the IIAC Tournament. Cornell finished sixth in the league at 3-5.
Wartburg senior forward Rachel Oswald was voted the IIAC's Most Valuable Player. T.J. Buchholz, of Wartburg, was named Coach of the Year.
Essandoh was the offensive leader on the Cornell men's squad, which finished 3-13 overall and 1-7 in IIAC play. He finished the season with 17 points on eight goals and one assist. Essandoh tallied two goals in a match twice, at MacMurray Sept. 28 and at Dubuque Oct. 25.
Miguel Bonilla, of Loras, was tabbed the IIAC's Most Valuable Player on the men's side. Central's Garry Laidlaw garnered Coach of the Year honors.
Wallace, a 2005 graduate of North Scott High School, is majoring in elementary education. She is the daughter of Mike and Sheri Wallace, Eldridge. Carberry, a 2007 graduate of Bear Creek High School, has not declared a major. She is the daughter of Stephen and Patricia Carberry, Idledale, Colo. Essandoh, a 2006 graduate of Presec (Ghana), is majoring in biochemistry. He is the son of Akwasi and Alberta Essandoh, Obuasi, Ghana.
