Rams graduate only one senior from 5-12 squad
Ram rewind - Adrianna Montellano (Bakersfield, Calif./Sky View Academy) and Jen Swotek (Council Bluffs/Thomas Jefferson) both tallied goals for the Rams, but it wasn't enough in a 7-2 season-ending Iowa Conference loss to Dubuque Saturday afternoon in Mount Vernon.
Cornell concluded the year 5-12 overall and 1-7 in the IIAC under first-year head coach Derek Bell. Four of the team's losses were decided by two goals or less.
"The way we ended the season will motivate us for the offseason," Bell said. "The girls know they can compete in this conference and will look to improve. We were not able to play with a consistent lineup for most of the season. At this level, that always takes its toll. We lost a lot of tough games."
Dubuque (14-5, 6-2) struck for an early 2-0 lead before Montellano knocked in an unassisted goal that sliced the deficit to 2-1 in the 10th minute. The Spartans came back with three more markers in the first half to take a 5-1 lead into intermission. Dubuque extended the margin to 7-1 midway through the second half. Swotek provided the final score for the Rams, connecting on her team-leading seventh goal at the 83-minute mark.
Cornell sophomore Dana Banks (Chicago, Ill./Whitney M. Young Magnet) collected four saves at keeper. Dubuque held a 20-6 edge in shots. Montellano fired three shots for the Rams.
Rams in the rankings - Swotek finished among the IIAC leaders in scoring this season. The junior forward ranked sixth in goals (0.44 gpg) and seventh in points (1.06 ppg). Banks was sixth in saves per match with 5.92. As a team, Cornell finished fourth in the IIAC with 6.12 saves per match.
A look ahead - The young Rams graduate only one senior in forward Christina Mitchell (Austin, Texas/Lyndon B. Johnson), a third-year letterwinner. Saturday's starting lineup included six sophomores, three juniors and a freshman.
Swotek posted team highs of 17 points, seven goals and three assists. Junior Kelli Ford (Lindenhurst, Ill./Lakes) and sophomore Rachel Wynn (Colorado Springs, Colo./Coronado) tied for second on the team in scoring with nine points apiece. Wynn shared team-high honors with three assists. Banks led the Rams with 77 saves in 13 matches.
