Cowan sets school record with 116 career 3-point goals
Coming up - Wednesday, Jan. 21, Wartburg (9-7, 4-3), Small Multi-Sport Center, Mount Vernon, 6 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 24, at Dubuque (6-10, 2-5), Dubuque, 2 p.m.
Ram review - Senior forward Tiffany Cowan (Independence, Mo./Truman) became Cornell's all-time leader for career 3-point goals made in a 52-39 Iowa Conference setback to rival Coe Monday night at Eby Fieldhouse in Cedar Rapids.
Cowan sank the record-setting triple with 7 minutes, 41 seconds left before halftime, her first of two 3-point goals in the game. She has now made 116 3-pointers in 86 games with the Rams. Cowan broke the old long-distance mark of 114, set by Bindy Comito from 1998-2002.
The 5-foot-10 Cowan is fast approaching another milestone, needing only 23 points to join the 1,000-point club at Cornell. Lisa Fry (1,131 points, 1998-2002), Comito (1,036 points, 1998-2002) and Marni Chandlee (1,031 points, 1998-2002) are the only women's basketball players in school history to achieve the feat.
Coe 52, Cornell 39 (Jan. 19, at Cedar Rapids)
The Rams (5-10 overall, 0-7 IIAC) tied it up at 22-22 early in the second half, but Coe broke the game open with a 17-4 spurt midway through the final period.
Cowan was one rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with 12 points and nine boards. Freshman Morgan Woods (Milwaukee, Wis./University School of Milwaukee) pitched in seven points and Teresa Cecchetti (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) dished out four assists.
The Kohawks (9-7, 3-4) prevailed despite shooting just 28.6 percent from the field. The Rams turned the ball over 18 times and lost the battle on the boards, 42-34.
Dubuque 71, Cornell 61 (Jan. 17, at Mount Vernon)
Paczosa tossed in a career-high 20 points and added 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season in a home loss to the Spartans.
Paczosa shot 6-of-12 from the field and canned all seven of her free throw attempts. She was one of four Rams to reach double figures in scoring. Cowan finished with 15 points while Cecchetti and Charlotte Milas (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) added 10 points apiece. Cecchetti also collected six rebounds and four assists.
The Rams took a 32-31 lead into intermission and built their biggest advantage at 43-38 with 15:08 remaining in the game. Dubuque (6-9, 2-4) unlocked a 58-58 tie with a 13-3 run to finish the game. The Rams attempted 15 fewer shots than Dubuque and committed 31 turnovers.
Loras 63, Cornell 58 (Jan. 14, at Dubuque)
Cowan registered her fourth double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds in a tight road loss to the Duhawks.
The Rams pressured Loras into 25 turnovers and shaved a 13-point, second-half deficit to 59-56 with less than a minute to play in regulation. The Duhawks sank four consecutive free throws in the final 30 seconds to preserve the victory.
Cecchetti collected 17 points and seven rebounds for the Rams, who outscored the Duhawks 34-31 in the second half. Paczosa added eight points and six rebounds.
Rams in the rankings - Cornell ranks second in the IIAC in field goal percentage defense at 38.1. The performance at Coe was the fourth time this season the Rams held an opponent under 30 percent shooting.
Paczosa leads the league in total rebounds (8.5 rpg) and defensive rebounds (5.7 rpg) and ranks third in offensive rebounds (2.7 rpg). Milas averages an IIAC-high 34.7 minutes per game, followed by Cowan in third at 31.9.
