Cowan, Paczosa post big numbers in two league defeats

Coming up - Wednesday, Feb. 11, vs. Loras (13-8, 8-4), Small Multi-Sport Center, Mount Vernon, 6 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 14, at Wartburg (13-8, 8-4), Waverly, 2 p.m.

Ram review - Tiffany Cowan (Independence, Mo./Truman) moved into sole possession of second place on Cornell's career scoring list and Kristin Paczosa (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) posted a pair of double-figure rebound games despite the Rams' 0-2 mark last week.

Cornell (5-16 overall, 0-13 Iowa Conference) dropped a 46-34 home decision Feb. 4 to Coe, a game in which the teams combined for the fewest points in the 60-game history of the rivalry. The Rams fell 67-58 to Buena Vista Saturday in Storm Lake.

Cowan drained six 3-point goals and collected 41 points in the two games, vaulting past Bindy Comito (1,036 points, 1998-2002) for second place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,077 points. Cornell's senior forward has scored in double figures in each of her last nine games, averaging 16.2 points during the stretch.

Cowan is 112 points shy of Lisa Fry's career scoring mark of 1,189. The Rams have three games left in the season.

Buena Vista 67, Cornell 58 (Feb. 7, at Storm Lake)
Cowan tossed in a season-high 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting in a road loss to the Beavers.

Cowan buried three 3-point goals and went 5-of-5 from the foul line. Charlotte Milas (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) pitched in 15 points. Paczosa led all players with 10 rebounds while Teresa Cecchetti (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) grabbed nine boards. Cowan, Paczosa and Cecchetti finished with three steals apiece.

The Rams got off to a strong start and built a 15-7 lead through the first 10 minutes of action. Buena Vista turned the tide with a 19-0 run and took a 33-25 lead into intermission. Cornell outrebounded the hosts, 36-30, but turned the ball over 29 times.

Coe 46, Cornell 34 (Feb. 4, at Mount Vernon)
The Rams were limited to 12 points in the second half as Coe prevailed in the low-scoring affair.

Cornell hit the first bucket of the second half to forge ahead, 24-22, with 19 minutes left to play. But the Rams would go nearly 10 minutes before scoring another point while the Kohawks took control with a 10-0 run. Cornell finished a tough shooting night 12-of-53 from the field (22.6 percent), including 4-of-25 in the second half.

Cowan tallied a game-high 19 points with eight rebounds. Paczosa hauled in 13 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. Cecchetti added seven points.

The Rams controlled the boards with a 40-32 rebound advantage. Cornell committed 21 turnovers to Coe's 16.

Rebound leaders - Cowan and Paczosa both rank in the top five on Cornell's career rebounds list. Cowan stands third with 671 rebounds. Paczosa moved into a tie with Erika Pepmeyer for fifth place with 435 rebounds.

Paczosa averages an IIAC-best 8.5 rebounds per game. She has reached double figures in rebounds in seven games this season and 14 in her career. Cowan is seventh in the league with 6.2 rebounds per game.
