2008-09 Rams receive AVCA Team Academic Award

MOUNT VERNON - Cornell College's volleyball team scored another high grade in the classroom this past season as a recipient of the 2008-09 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award.

Head coach Jeff Meeker's team has been recognized for the academic honor six consecutive years, only three years shy of the longest active streak in NCAA Division III held by Central and UW-La Crosse.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

A record 409 teams were recognized, including 77 in Division III. Cornell was one of four schools honored from the Iowa Conference, joining Central, Wartburg and Simpson.

The Rams open the 2009 season Sept. 1 at Monmouth in Monmouth, Ill.
