Primary and Secondary Insurance

Primary Health Insurance:

Every student athlete at Cornell College must have primary major medical insurance to be eligible to participate in intercollegiate athletics.  It is your responsibility to make sure that your primary insurance provides adequate coverage while you attend Cornell College. Some examples that may not provide coverage are state funded programs, military, and HMO's.  If your policy does not cover you while at Cornell College you will need to purchase additional short term medical insurance so you are covered during your competitive season.  If you have questions about this or agencies that will sell these policies please contact Head Athletic Trainer Eric Dybvig at edybvig@cornellcollege.edu.

Secondary Health Insurance:

Cornell also offers secondary insurance coverage in which all student-athletes are enrolled in automatically with no charge to the student-athlete.  The secondary insurance is designed to offset some of the cost that your primary insurance does not cover.  Please do not assume that all medical bills will be covered under this secondary insurance. Some stipulations of the policy:

  • Injury must happen during the competitive season of the particular sport during a sanctioned practice or competition
  • Injuries that happen during the off-season, or during the summer will not be covered
  • Pre-existing conditions will not be covered

If you are injured during a scheduled practice or competition and need to be seen at a medical facility the following must be done:

  • You must be referred to the medical facility by the athletic trainer
  • You must fill out a claim form and send it in to the  secondary insurance company
  • You must inform all the providers that have provided you with medical care that you have this secondary policy
  • You must send in Estimate of Benefits (EOB's) from your primary insurance and any bills you receive to the secondary insurance company.
  • Follow up with secondary insurance company on any outstanding bills

This is the student's responsibility and the athletic training staff will help student athletes with this process if needed or if any questions arise.
