Ram Review - Cornell crowned six event champions, highlighted by a record-breaking performance from senior Julia Hanson (Charles City/Charles City) in the weight throw, at the season-opening Knox Indoor Pentangular Saturday in Galesburg, Ill. No team scores were kept.

Hanson launched a winning toss of 47 feet, 8 inches in the weight throw. She broke Cornell's school record in the event of 47-5, set by Lynn Schneider in 2005. Hanson topped her previous best mark last season by nearly four feet.

"Julia had two big throws in the finals to break Lynn Schneider's school record," Speidel said. "Lynn was an All-American thrower for Cornell, so for Julia to break one of her records is pretty exciting."

Hanson was one of four Cornell winners on the women's side. Senior Brittany Sperl (Boyd, Wis./Stanley-Boyd) pulled off a dramatic win in the triple jump. After falling from first to fourth in the finals, Sperl sprung back to the top with a big leap of 33-5.75 on her final attempt of the meet's last event.

"Brittany added some drama to the end of the meet and put together a great jump for the win," Speidel said.

The Rams also picked up victories from senior Rachelle Hawkins (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) in the 800 run (2 minutes, 21.82 seconds) and sophomore Allie Jagielo (Almond, Wis./Tri-County) in the mile (5:38.58). Jagielo finished second in the 800 (2:33.47) and sophomore Andrea Aerts (David City, Neb./East Butler) took second in the mile (5:42.48).

The Cornell men's team received wins from freshman Adam Rooyakkers (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) and sophomore Andrew Tobben (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia). Rooyakkers raced to a winning time of 2:06.49 in the 800 for his first collegiate title. He nosed out teammate Chase Nowak (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) by .64 seconds. Tobben posted a seven-second victory in the 3000, crossing the finish line in 9:13.48.

"I am very proud of the distance runners," Speidel said. "Rachelle, Allie, Adam and Andrew all ran well to win their respective races. For us to be successful this year we have to have big contributions from our distance runners and I know coach (Dan) Schofer will have them ready."

Freshman Marshall Kraker (Parshall, Colo./West Grand) took second in the pole vault (9-5.25). Nowak and Kirkwood Donavin (Salt Lake City, Utah/West) finished 3-4, respectively, in the mile. Jeff Curran was third in the 400 (53.72). Dan Netwal (Eldridge/North Scott) placed third in the high jump (5-11.50).

"We were without a good number of athletes Saturday due to injuries and other issues," Speidel said. "So we have to get healthy as we look to move forward as a team this season."
