Wohrley, Hawkins, Craw receive academic track and field honors
MOUNT VERNON - Cornell College's James Wohrley (Dixon, Ill./Dixon), Rachelle Hawkins (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) and Madison Craw (Mason City/Mason City) have been named to the 2009 USTFCCCA Division III All-Academic Track and Field teams.
Student-athletes recognized must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and have met the NCAA Division III Indoor or Outdoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard in their respective events.
Cornell was also honored as one of the USTFCCCA Division III Women's All-Academic Track and Field teams, which required a minimum GPA of 3.10. Coach Lonnie Speidel's 2009 Rams compiled a 3.33 GPA, ranking 54th of the 100 programs that qualified.
Wohrley, who will begin his senior season this fall, claimed the pentathlon title at the 2009 Iowa Conference Indoor Championships and took third in the decathlon at the IIAC Outdoor meet. He set an NCAA provisional mark and school record with 6,335 points in the decathlon, coming within seven points of qualifying for the national championships.
A total of 186 student-athletes representing 78 Division III colleges and universities made up the all-academic men's team. Wohrley was one of only four males honored from the IIAC.
Hawkins, who graduated in the spring, earned All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the mile run at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March. She became Cornell's third female indoor All-American in track and field. Hawkins, who owns seven school records in track and field, was also named to the 2008 USTFCCCA Women's Cross Country All-Academic Team, released in February.
Craw, a junior-to-be, qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the shot put but did not place. She also posted an NCAA provisional mark in the shot put during the outdoor season.
Hawkins and Craw were among 274 student-athletes representing 91 Division III institutions honored on the women's all-academic team, including 31 from the IIAC.
Wohrley, a 2006 graduate of Dixon High School, is majoring in Kinesiology. He is the son of Wayne and Sara Wohrley, Dixon, Ill. Craw, a 2007 graduate of Mason City High School, is majoring in Biology and Secondary Education. She is the daughter of Scott and Darlene Craw, Mason City. Hawkins, a 2005 graduate of Bishop Kelly High School, majored in Kinesiology. She is the daughter of Mike and Renee Hawkins, Boise, Idaho.
