Hawkins named to academic all-district second team

MOUNT VERNON - Cornell College's Rachelle Hawkins (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII women's track and field/cross country team.

HawkinsHawkins was honored on the college division second team. The teams are chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible for selection, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic and athletic standing, be a starter or key reserve and possess at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Hawkins majored in kinesiology and carried a 3.69 GPA. She was one of four female student-athletes recognized from the Iowa Conference, joining first-team picks Hannah Baker and Kelsey Steffens, both of Wartburg, and second-team selection Rachel Boeke of Central.

Hawkins recently graduated as one of the most accomplished distance runners in Cornell history. In cross country, she is a three-time all-conference and two-time all-region performer and became the program's first national qualifier since 1993. On the track, Hawkins earned All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the mile run at the 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships. Hawkins, a four-time all-conference honoree, owns seven school records in track and field.     

Hawkins, a 2005 graduate of Bishop Kelly High School, is the daughter of Mike and Renee Hawkins, Boise, Idaho.
